Page 1 of my Jimi Hendrix comic. Done A3 with my usual pen. These will all be scans from photocopies of a photocopy, so it has lost a bit of detail. This was done in about 1997, it took me until 2002 to complete the comic, but that is because I am slow.

Although I did not know it at the time Jimi Hendrix recorded "Woke up this morning and found myself dead". A lot of coincidences came out of this story. The whole thing came in one evening, despite the fact that I knew nothing about Jimi Hendrix and I had only heard Crosstown traffic and Voodoo Child. Whilst drawing the story I found a lot of Jimi's life was reflected in the stor, and yet I had know knowledge of these things. It is a bit odd.

For people who don't know these things Jimi died on September the 18th 1970:

In the early morning hours of September 18, 1970, Jimi Hendrix was found dead in the basement flat of the Samarkand Hotel at 22 Lansdowne Crescent in London. Hendrix died amid circumstances which have never been fully explained, and the exact details of his death will probably never be confirmed. He had spent the night with his German girlfriend, Monika Dannemann, and likely died in bed after drinking wine and taking nine Vesperax sleeping pills, then asphyxiating on his own vomit. Police and ambulance reports reveal that not only was Hendrix dead when they arrived on the scene, but he had been dead for some time, the apartment's front door was wide open, and the apartment itself empty.

A sad poem written by Hendrix that was found in the apartment has led some to believe that he committed suicide. More speculative is the belief that Hendrix was murdered—forcibly given the sleeping pills and wine, then asphyxiated with a scarf by professionals hired by manager Michael Jeffery. The most popular theory, however, is that he simply misjudged the potency of the sleeping pills, and asphyxiated in his sleep due to an inability to regain consciousness when he vomited.

I read a similar article when I perused Wikipedia after i saw your last Jimi pic. He has led an interesting life.

That's kinda strange that the authorities never really knew what caused his death. Did Monika Dannemann ever say anything about that?

About the pic itself i think you did a great job. The crosshatching somehow sells it to me, especially the woodgrain in the last panel.

Did anyone ever appraoch you to publish this before?

So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage, or your strength, come nay further, for death awaits you all . . . with nasty big pointy teeth!

I sent it to Fantagraphics books, and got a one line email saying: we don't think this would be a commercially vaible project.

Lol

But I've actually only ever prined up 3 copies of it, so I've never sent it to any other publishers. I just wanted to get it done, I didn't care much about anyone seeing it.

Why not commercially viable? lol. I agree with Timnomonin; the cross-hatching is fanastic. Definitely gives a great feeling of atmosphere to the piece. I also like the cartooning style you use to draw Hendrix, well done.

Fantagraphics? Fartagraphics ..was Hate commercially viable..did very well as far as I remember (was Fantagraphics responisable for that?) no matter this has the vibe of Oz ,and early 70's something which Revolver could not really do (which is sad as it was a good comic as was the Hendrix strip in it..I think a guy called Floyd Hughes illustated it and ex Oz and N.M.E journo Charles Shaw Murrey wrote it as well as a few Hendrix biographies ) :arc:
:iconkloiz:
I have to say,i really dig your ink work...and the comic is interesting. Its sad that he died the way he did...even as confusing as it is...just like jim morrison(the doors)
:iconmonoplasm:
Yes, how come the good 60's musicians had to die and people like cliff richards are still fit and well, its just not fair is it. :P
:iconkloiz:
no,it isn't fair...look at john lenon and dimebag darrel(pantera)...gunned down...the world is a scary place.
